Your Gifts Matter
A devotional from david blair
I will bless you…so that you can be a blessing.
Gifts that provide strong foundations on which to build are gifts that can last for eternity.
I am sure that many of you as a child complained about having to go to church every Sunday morning. It certainly would have been more fun to stay home and play. But I still remember my mother emphatically saying, “We go to church on Sunday!” Each Sunday at church was another block in the faith foundation of my life. Thanks, Mom and Dad!!
Suzanne and I moved to Savannah, Georgia in 1980 and joined Isle of Hope Methodist, our first Methodist church. We made lifelong friends there—people who gave us gifts of their love, their friendship and their faith. These gifts allowed us to build a stronger personal relationship with Jesus Christ upon which we could grow spiritually and share with others.
In Genesis 12 God explained to Abraham that he was being blessed by God so that he could be a blessing to others. While it is wonderful for us to have been given foundational gifts of love, friendship, and faith, these gifts are just the beginning. God expects us to use these gifts to bless others so they, in turn, can be a blessing. One gift becomes an eternity of gifts that matter.
In these days of Thanksgiving, God, show us ways of using the gifts You give us to be a blessing to others. May your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
